Our sages teach us, the first Temple where the sin was known, we needed only a 70 year exile to rectify it, the second, where the sin was unknown, already close to 2000!

But do we not know the sin of the second Temple – it states clearly – it was the sin of bigotry!
Ah, you see, bigotry is worse than the three cardinal sins man must give up his life for, which the Jews in the first Temple were guilty of, murder insect and idolatry!
WHAT? BIGOTRY IS WORSE THAN MURDER, INSCEST, AND IDOLATRY?!
Yes and no!
You see, when God seeks not our punishment rather rectification we must know the following – if a person murders, commits incest, or worships an idol, they know that they did something wrong, it was only their crime of passion.
However, when a person is a bigot – what a person thinks, you are evil, as an entire group of Jews today see themselves as elite, and literally see all other Jews as being not even Jews, as their leader rabbi shach branded Lubavitch, Sephardim amongst others, as non-Jews (his actual words.)
Bigotry comes from arrogance – the bigot wants to be a bigot, for he desires to feel superior to another.
And hence his crime is almost impossible to rectify, for he justifies his evil on moral grounds.
