Our sages summed up life in the following statement “may your right hand draw close and may your left hand distance” – you see, this is the challenge of life: Do we approach people with love or trepidation; do we embrace or do we protect? – Of course, the answer is discernment – I will give a whole bunch of examples demonstrating this dichotomy:

First and foremost, let’s look at our attitude towards criminals – generally speaking in western secure civilization where there isn’t direct fear so there is compassion – Hence the attitude is begrudgingly, we need to punish – However if we look at the Bible which is God’s perfect mechanism of discernment, when to love and when to be tuff – On one hand there needs to be a fear of punishment, on the other, the burden of proof to convict beyond a shadow of doubt! (So what we have instead is a laxidaisel system where we don’t feel too guilty, because we don’t have capital only penitentiary (usually) punishment, but meanwhile, many many people behind bars were convicted based on juries who don’t have the foggiest clue – In Judaism these convictions would take place under 23 expert judges etc.)
Our attitude toward women, minorities etc. – again we have the same approach – as we are secure, our attitude is compassion – Again this is off – the protection of everyone’s right is an absolute, it’s not a act of magnamity – Yet simultaneously, is the expectation of everyone’s obligation – When a person takes the benevolent approach, they give the other a free pass, which doesn’t help but actually destroys the other! – For ultimately we all wish to grow and become proud of our achievements.
Nowhere is this more prevalent that in our disastrous attitude toward children – based on the Bible we should educate children – We should have the highest expectations – we should place great educational demands – primarily to know and study the moral ethical codes and expect them to follow them – Instead we have democratic patronizing attitude – This essentially makes the child feel like he is just another twig floating in the ocean – while he should feel as part parcel and the future of his people.
Money – now when it comes to money, suddenly we find God – money is the holy grail of western liberalism – This is because where there is a lack of absolute values, temporary narcissistic ones dominate – The proper attitude to money again is balanced, it is a very good tool to be used for goodness and kindness.
Our foreign policy – again the same fundamental mistake – we see ourselves as superpower hence all we need to do is be benevolent – Benevolent is a good thing to those who deserve it – countries like Saudi Arabia that sponsored the 9/11, countries like Iran that killed thousands of Americans (never mind their global sponsorship of terror) these countries should be annihilated – For if they are willing to blow themselves up just to kill a couple of thousand people, certainly they are willing to blow themselves up to wipe out the whole world – and if one says, that they wish to live – that is not true, they wish to die and go to Mohammed’s virgin brothel.
