Optimal Man

For an engine to work, three things are needed, the hardware (engine,) energy (be it fire, electricity etc.) But most importantly, the direction! – the direction, is the ability to take that energy and actually reduce it to the desired levels – imagine a car that had but one gear – it would be either too fast, or too slow.
You need all five gears to sometimes be fast and sometimes be slow!
Similarly, for us to work, three things are needed:
Our body with it’s senses; ability of thought, speech and action.
Then we need to be happy, for we are depressed literally (flat, in stalled mode) when we are God-forbid too depressed / sad about life.
But most importantly, we need the ability to regulate our joy, for if we (in psychological terms) become manic, think everything is wonderful and lose touch with the fact that other cars are driving down the same road, we become, well, in normal terms, crazy.
So the question is, as joy feels good and regulation, restriction – thinking – doesn’t, what to do?!
And the Zohar, the wisdom of God for regulating man, teaches; though one side of your heart must be joyful – through hope and trust in God, and seeing blessings not curses – the other side of your heart, must be depressed, through seeing other’s pain, sorrow, heartache – even imaginary, for it’s painful nonetheless.
