Noach, Noach — Rest in an Unsettled World אלה תולדות נח נח איש צדיק תמים היה בדורותיו “These are the generations of Noach; Noach was a righteous man, wholehearted in his generations.” (Bereishis 6:9) Why is Noach’s name repeated, and what does it mean to be righteous “in his generations”? Sanhedrin 108a records two readings: one sees Noach’s righteousness as relative to his surroundings; the other praises the extraordinary strength needed to remain righteous in a corrupt generation. Noach’s name evokes rest and comfort, yet his life unfolds amid extraordinary instability. Spiritual rest is not necessarily the absence of disturbance. It can be the capacity to remain anchored in Hashem while the world around us is unsettled.
