Many are those who are bothered by the two souls that inhabit us, for we are both idealistic and narcissistic, we are both selfless and selfish, loving and lusting, and obviously these two souls are like driving in forward and reverse; and nothing hampers a person more than a split personality; for when a person is driving, even in the wrong direction – at least they feel like a whole person, but to simultaneously be driving both forward and reverse, is maddening – what to do? what to do?!

The Alter Rebbe teaches, that we obviously must be driven by our Divine soul; our higher aspirations for world peace, love, unity etc. must be the center of our existence – however, did not the same God who created these higher aspirations, give us the lower, narcissistic, selfish and lusting instincts?! – is God himself schizophrenic?! – the answer is similar to the story that the great saintly masters in the Talmudic times decided to kill the lustful desire, so they slayed the demon of lust (for all physical drives have a spiritual demonic source) but no chicken laid an egg for a year, whereupon they reinstated this demon – so lust as all things in our world actually are necessities – if we only loved, only were selfless, only were idealistic, would we be capable of propagating? surviving?! so the trick in life is obviously to understand where and when to advance; where and when to retreat. and here is the trick: some are of the erroneous notion, that religions, including Judaism is to stave off that animal side to man; but that is to not see the Divine in the mundane, to separate realms of existence, as if the God of lust, is not the God of love; the God of survival is not the God of selflessness; and even the God of narcissism is not the God of idealism! – all comes from the same source! so in simple words, God desires exactly what he wants: it is not a question, if something is pleasurable or not, there is but a single question, does this act follow God’s wishes – if it gives pleasure, than thank God that you need not compel yourself to do his will.
