Love is an emotion, it cannot compare to conviction – in other words, we all exist in one of three states: – when we have security, our instinctual (as we are social creatures) desire is for camaraderie – however when things are insecure (as we see empirically) we go into self-protection – the same nice guy (or gal) will become sadistic (for as they say, “if you can beat em’ you join em” – this is why there is such a disconnect in secure societies with the global reality, which is primarily sadistic; as game theory teaches, people either live “I against you” or “I for you”; and it all depends on security) Finally both are simply emotional instincts (not so different to the various emotions that control dogs, cats mosquitoes etc.) a human being (unique among all of God’s creations) has the capacity to A. feel secure, knowing that all is good, coming from a good God (for without security, we go into panic-protection) B. CHOOSE, BECAUSE IT IS WHAT GOD WANTS. (And need we better role-models than all our great saints, from Moses to the Rebbe and everyone in-between) to dedicate our lives to LOVE
