Just as a person doing something out of fear or love is diametrically opposed (so if I drink a drink I wish to, or drink I a drink I must, even for health reasons, the experience is vastly different) similarly, there are basically two kinds of people, those whose self-esteem is already good, so what they do most often is for enhancing their ego (which is why so many in the west desire to be movie stars; o.k., once that dream is over, some kind of career etc.) and those people whose self-esteem is bad, so what they are doing, is not to boost their ego, but to rid themselves of their feeling of shame and the difference comes out in the following observable phenomena: the former do not step on others on the way up, while the latter only use and abuse others, for their lack of self-esteem creates jealousy over those who have it; hence not only do they lack feelings of emotional attachment (obviously the very fact they lack self-esteem is because someone abused them, hence they have detached from people, called dissociation) but unfortunately, stepping on others actually gives them temporarily relief, from the painful experience of perpetual low self-esteem and just imagine, how you would pretty much do anything, if you were sitting on a hot stove
