John he said, “I know you perfectly” (Poem)

John he said, “I know you perfectly”
“Really…” I challenged with a bit of a snort
“Let me tell you, I was there when you were born.”
“But since then I have obviously grown!”
He smiled as one does to a cute child acting foolishly.
“You see” he continued, “your heart has many layers, many compartments, many stories.
I know the core, the essence; I really do.”
Well it was my turn to smirk.
“Really, so how about you tell me?”
“Well” in his imitable fashion he said – “No,
How about, You, tell me!”
As I needed to confront this most basics of questions, I stripped away some of my protective masks – you know, the tuff exteriors.
I let my mind travel
Recalling my idealism, my compassion…
“It’s almost like I had a twin”
“Yes,” he prodded
“I remember him, he was unbelievably caring, he could sense other people.”
“Yes” “Yes!”
“He had this innate sensitivity.”
