It’s all so simple, it always was this simple and it always will be this simple, within us there are two directions (in fact every animal works exactly the same) there is the forward and reverse direction, towards and away from, what I like or dislike, what I want or don’t want and the balance of these desires are what controls all people; the thing is, what do we want? and this is where it gets complicated (for in an animal there is a single soul for pleasure and not pain) but within a human (bifrat yid) there are three separate conflicting, mutually antagonistic (though ultimately complimentary) souls, there is the Divine spirit of truth, truth is “Give up your mind and desires for God’s” there is the animal soul’s instincts (like every animal) for pleasure and no pain, and then unfortunately worst and least, there is our ego (“my” “me” “I!” so it’s not even about ‘what is in my personal benefit’ not even what is say pleasurable or lack of pain, certainly, not in my, humility to adhere to God or my conscience, rather, everything has to go “my way!” because the ego has deluded us that we are grand – this is like Pharaoh, who lost his country, his throne etc. but could not give up his slaves, as his ego – “I am boss!” – interfered with his own personal gain and of-course his soul/conscience.)
