It states in Tanya that Tzaddikim, the truly good people, only their good – God – leads them – Average good people, are both led by their good and evil sides – and the truly bad people are (unbeknown to them, for they in fact see nothing but greatness in themselves) completely led by their ego – evil (which is why they have no compassion, morality, remorse and the good they do is only for agrandization)
