In truth, Judaism teaches, we are responsible to help others – it’s a very radical notion – for as the Rebbe clarifies, the subtle but not so subtle difference in the translation of the word charity – charity is the translation of the word Tzedakah – but charity connotes a magnanimity from the philanthropist to the pauper; the true translation of charity in Hebrew, when we look at the root of tzedaka, comes from the word tzedek, which means justice – in other words, according to Judaism, it’s not just, to leave another person in pain!
