In life quite simply what God did is he made droids – now all droids have different shapes – but fundamental to all droids is their on / off mode – in fact all computers work in this mechanism (0/1 which are on / off switches of the transistors) Another way of looking at it, which is most useful, we have an yes or no mode – We call the yes mode love (desire – attraction) the fear (prevention of pain/shame mode) no – the thing is, unlike all other beings, that have a single soul, so an animal’s yes is to whatever is instinctual pleasurable and no to whatever is instinctually painful, and angel’s yes is to whatever God recommends and no to everything else, We have both!! and through trial and error (for example, drug-addicts are good people but the drug became the primary yes, but eventually they see that it should be no, and they vacillate between this yes and no, until they gain the human ability to have what is called gevurah, self-discipline)
