In a talk on this week’s Parsha, the Rebbe reveals God’s strategy which really encompasses everything that ever has / is happened

To begin with, we must understand that God fashioned us as independent choosers

So obviously God wants us to independently – that’s a very big term – choose what’s good.

Now there are three reasons a person can choose something: the first is because it serves me, usually that means it gives me a pleasure – think about all the things you do because it give you pleasure, eating, relations etc. etc.

The next reason is fear, in other words, because I don’t want a negative consequence – so think of all the things that you do to, to not receive negative consequences, such as working – so these are things you wouldn’t choose to do if you had say money lying around, but because you need money, you are forced to do it – of-course dictators use fear of death to tyrannize people into following their will

But then there is a third reason, because you are looking for truth – this reason is neither based on an instinct, nor based on fear, it is simply the human desire to discover.

So when God gave us the Torah, in truth the Jews were compelled out of love – if I came and saved you from a torturous slavery and drowned your oppressor and regaled you with spiritual prophecy and the bliss that accompanies it, you certainly would accept any offer I make.

However, today when we Jews are not oppressed – when we are living lives which are free – lives which are not compelling us to believe in any way, now exclusively are we in the time that we can choose.
