If we recognize the truth, that we are not one person but a composite of many souls, primarily the altruistic idealistic Divine, the self-desiring for pleasure and fear of pain / animal – the evil ego, desiring supremacy and intolerant of feeling lower; and finally an observer, who is watching this drama unfold and no less, if not all-important, who has the ability to, through absolute ordering ourselves, for as the Alter Rebbe writes in Tanya, the mind can order the heart, so effectively the previous three souls are emotions and it is only our mind, who can both choose, as well as by dictating to ourselves, go in the direction of its dictates (and if we don’t, whichever emotion is strongest at the moment wins.)
