If God were to talk to us – would he sound like James Earl Jone’s baritone? – the truth is, of course, God spoke to many righteous men and the midrash says, he came in soft unassuming gentle voices, but far more important, the very notion that God is an authority figure, bellowing in instructions, reveals a fundamental misunderstanding about God’s authority – if anything, God is like a loving mother who is advising her only child, for it is not her ego, but her unconditional-love.
