Ideally people feel secure, then their naturel love for others, causes them to identify and try to assist one another, but often, certainly in insecure countries people feel defensive (in other words, that unless they protect their body, money, children etc. they can God-forbid get raped, murdered, have things stolen etc.) hence they go into an offensive stance.
