I just read an amazing trick from the NIMH: when a person feels anxious, it is because they feel or most often, felt, insecure – in other words, we exist in one of two states – the first is security or insecurity – now if we feel insecure, even fifty years ago (hence PTSD) it alters our fundamental ability to think that “life is secure” – of course, anxiety as they say, afflicts 20% of the adult population (in America, and I am sure in countries where there is more insecurity, the figures are far higher) so the way to reclaim your sense of security is by reimagining the event which made you feel insecure, yet this time, do it in a secure space – in other words, let’s use the example of a soldier in battle – so there is a heightened anxiety, as he doesn’t want to get shot, but if he can look back and picture that scene, but with a sense that he is safe, he can fundamentally alter his perception of his underlying sense of security
