We begin life with certain subsets of instincts

One of them is social

Dogs for example are social creatures

I am currently staying with a friend who has two dogs

Though they never met me

Whenever I come past they do their utmost for affection

But another subset of our instincts is both fear and jealousy

In an ideal world we would feel secure

Hence our instinct for social interaction (as we see manifest in children) would allow for unconditional flow of open communication (to some extent we see this in America – where people feel secure hence are open with each other)

Conversely, when people have been verbally or in any way (God-forbid) abused, they shut down their love, as the more primitive protective mechanism of fear (need for security) kicks in

Unfortunately this is the beginning, not the end of the story; for as we are by nature jealous of one another, hence we (if under the spell of fear) become jealous of those who do have love
