Fathoming the unfathomable

Rabbi Y. Jacobson was asked to give a lecture (in hostile “territory”) regarding if the Rebbe is Moshiach – so he first quoted all the sources of what a Rebbe is, then what Moshaich is – he then said, “Now that you have clarity, you decide.”

The same logic must be applied to some of the bizarre – to the uninitiated – statements, made by the Rebbe in 1991, the Rebbe said, “Moshiach is here,” “Moshiach was spiritually born,” “We are in the messianic age” etc. etc.

Coupled with the fact, that it is both obvious, as well as the Rebbe said, “We need Moshiach” “We need Moshaich, now!” “How long can exile endure!” etc. etc.

It seems, somehow, we are in both stages simultaneously!

The way we can be in both stages simultaneously, depends on what your definition of Moshiach is – if your definition is the messianic miracles, the answer is, on one hand we have a taste: Israel, Jews are free to worship worldwide (even in Iran, an arch enemy of the Jewish people, the Jews worship freely) a physical and spiritual abundance (at least spiritually seeking) a general positive human rights attitude etc.

Of-course, this is but a taste of the complete peace, the total return of the Jewish people etc. that will occur in the physical dimension of Moshiach.

But Moshiach obviously is not physical.

If it is was, technically, in the times of Solomon, we had all that will occur: world-peace, the Holy Temple, the Jews in Israel etc.

Rather, Moshiach is about something that we can say, has truly begun.

As Jewish mysticism explains, Moshiach is in essence, the revelation of God.

Now this is something most Jews have a very difficult time understanding, for our paradigm of God is invisible – how do you reveal something invisible?!

The answer is, none of us have seen electricity, yet we know it is there; we haven’t seen radio waves, but we know it is there; for some things, are revealed, by their effect!

In a similar sense, prior to 1991, the birth of Moshiach, Moshiach’s arrival etc. God was here, but “not,” for he was not revealed.

In fact, even those of us who knew about God, had a dogmatic viewpoint.

As all studies testify, since that time, literally, hundreds of millions of people, have developed personal relationships!

For what the Rebbe means, is, that God, now, is revealed!

And as Chassidis explains: God is both beyond and personal; both “aloof” and individual; both allowing freedom, as well as – to those who seek – giving directions!
