The story is told, that once the Tzemach Tzeddek, third Chabad Rebbe, explained, that the Baal Shem Tov took all the information – Jewish – available till then, and expanded and perceived even higher – then came the Alter Rebbe, who did likewise – he was silent – and Reb Hillel Paritcher who was in the audience said “and then the Tzemach Tzeddek; and expanded even higher.”

 

This is a fundamental story:

 

In fact, today I think we are blessed, for we have a new way of looking at information.

 

It used to be, people thought information was in the past – whether they were Judaic scholars or philosophers, looking either at the Torah or say at Aristotle, they believed that information was something that WAS revealed.

 

So if you wanted information, all you did is, you studied these great works and presto you were wise.

 

But today, we have a much different relationship with information, for we realize it is BEING discovered! for example, it used to be a doctor knew everything, for there wasn’t that much to know; now we have specialists, and even they know, that they don’t know, all there is to know!

 

We have come to the realization, that information is not a physical object and hence subject to limitations; it too will constantly – be continuously! brought into our reality, by greater and greater discoveries!!

 

This then is perhaps one of the great dilemmas the religious modern man has, for it contradicts his very assumption of truth – no confusion prevailed greater than the debate between: is science or God, true?!

 

The answer is, as is everything, science is but one of God’s paradigms – more accurately, parable – of how to understand God.

 

We must wipe clean our understanding, that “all that could was revealed,” as people looked at science just a generation or two ago, and we must understand, God being infinite, will continually reveal more!
