Ego is only a sign of delusion (there are three motives – either innate (as it states by Amalek they have delusions of grandeur with no basis – interestingly Germans are descendants of Amalek) or is it based on some kind of talent etc. or it can actually be produced (as I believe in the majority of cases from low self-esteem hence a compensation.)
