Mind – objective
Heart – subjective desires
Heart 1 – survival
Heart 2 – social
Heart 3 – children (enduring forever)
Heart 4 – compassion
Heart 5 – lust (sexual, but any form of pleasure)
Ego/Liver – Recognition (but the flip-side is anger over being demeaned, belittled, ignored (if you expect differently; which also relates to jealousy over the good others have, if you perceive yourself to be entitled to it – Jealousy turns to hate, hate turns to a desire to destroy, like the pleasure you get from killing a mosquito.)

So heres how it works, as the Alter Rebbe writes, we can either (usually) go top down or bottom up.

The nature of an individual is that they will go bottom up and top down.

If a person’s ego kicks in, they lose their objectivity – they feel they are entitled to everything! – that’s why a king or a toddler (both “entitled people” in their estimation) go ballistic over any infraction, as they are “entitled” to get what they want –

Rationally speaking, there is a rational quest of objective (i.e. non-subjective) truth.

Finally, emotionally (heart) speaking, there are inborn desires and the heart uses the mind to contemplate how to achieve them.
