By understanding ourselves, we, well, understand what will or won’t make us happy!

The Kabbalah teaches, we are in essence God; which means, as God is compassion, love, kindness, so we!
However, the core light exists in a shell, the shell is our soul, now our soul has five parts to it:
The first is called Pleasure, so we enjoy compassion, we enjoy love, we enjoy kindness; the next part which is the shell of pleasure, is desires: so we desire to be kind, because it gives us pleasure, we desire to love as we derive pleasure from love.
But the thing is, desire is in a sense more powerful than pleasure, for say a person for whatever reason desires revenge, so though this goes against his compassionate side, the desire on one hand, will eliminate his sense of pleasure in compassion, and on the other hand, create a new suicidal pleasure in revenge (for of course revenge can only lead to revenge, but we see how people lose their minds when it comes to their desires!)
Although the soul also contains intellects, emotions and vehicles of expression: thoughts speech and action…
Desire, and understanding, controlling, and directing it, is the key!
For if desire is stronger than pleasure, as we demonstrated, it means that whenever we create desires – and we all have lots of them, we end up having frustrations, for as we have unfulfilled desires, we have many frustrations!
(In fact this is why we get tired – being awake doesn’t make us tired as is evident if you are doing something fun – but we pick up desires through the day, often imperceptible and by the time night comes, our little pile of sorrows (from not getting them fulfilled) weighs heavily on our hearts; which is the great gift God gave us, that in dreams, we fulfill our desires, so we wake up ready to start this insane process again!)
So only fulfillable desires, as well as meaningful desires, should we entertain; so in this way a. we will not be frustrated, as we can fulfill them and b. we will be proud of ourselves once we have fulfilled them!
Succinctly, only desire to do what God wants you to!!
