Beating Your Yetzer Hara

We all have a Yetzer Hara, a demon (bad angel – devil in cristain terms) within us; it’s easily verified by the simple fact that when we think of doing pleasurable activities that aren’t necessarily holy, nothing stops us; but when we think of doing altruistic or holy activities, such as prayer, usually we are flooded with many busy, important, necessary, even life compelling urgencies – now, how come we don’t seem to remember these urgencies when we are watching a movie?! yet the thing to remember is, the Yetzer Hara is a genius, he knows he can’t come and suggest for you to go against your value system, so he confuses you, USING YoUr VALUE SYSTEM!
As the famous story with Reb Matteleh Chernobler that a man made a large donation, then someone else came and needed help – amazingly the same amount as his donation – finally as he wanted to give the donation, a thought crept into his mind, is it fair to give one man so much money, shouldn’t it be distributed amongst many? but he gave the donation anyway, realizing this is the Yetzer Hara, for why didn’t he think such noble thoughts of distributing to many people, PRIOR to having thought about giving the money to the individual!?
