Based on my humble understanding, from the Rebbe’s teaching, which are based on all the prophecies, wisdom of Judaism – we are currently literally, both in the messianic era, as well as soon the messianic era will arrive!

How can we both, be within, and not within, simultaneously?!
As we had occasion to mention, everything consists of a body and a soul – the soul obviously is infinitely more vital than the body that houses it.
Similarly, the messianic era, both has a soul and body.
The soul is the era which began when the Rebbe said Moshiach came (as the Sfas Emmes teaches, the coming of the Moshiach is separate from the messianic redemption, similar, to first Mosses came to the Jews in Egypt, only later were they redeemed.)
Now what is the soul of the Moshiach? effectively the soul of Moshiach is God-himself descending into our domain.
It used to be, two domains existed, spiritual and physical, if you wanted God, you took the next exist out of our universe, the materialistic nature of humanity, and entered into the spiritual universe with perhaps your ultimate nirvana as many faiths believe being the heavenly reward.
However, as Chassidus never tires to teach, both heaven and earth are equidistant from the mutual creator; heaven though may FEEL closer, as it’s less mundane; is not closer to God than earth! in fact, ironically Chassidus teaches, from the feeling perspective, though heaven FEELS more spiritual, the very dirt you stand on, contains infinitely greater levels of God than heaven (as heaven is but a ray of God’s infinite light, whereas the dirt, the physical, is God hidden!)
But ultimately, God himself contains the unique ability to simultaneously exist on all fronts; in other words, often we easily assume, evil must be separate to God, but like an artist painting black and white, evil, though only to provide the background for light, is created, sustained, energized, by the same God.
For when you see the good that will come from the evil, say a doctor creating a blood transfusion, you are willing to poke / prod, because you understand the infinite transformation and better future, evil will bring about!
So the descent of God from 1991 in our universe, hence the incredible chaos we see, is in fact, the ability / infinity of God revealed; for God himself sees no chaos, only sees people learning to discover the world is chaotic – hence searching for truth, hence, discovering all that God desires they should.
We have spoken about this, so I don’t want to belabor the point – but first and foremost, mark my words, in a thousand years after the Beis Hamikdosh will have descended, the dead resurrected, it will be the year 1991, in which the true celebration of the messianic redemption will be held – for it represents, not the miraculous hand of God, which shows on God’s miraculous ability, but precisely the hidden hand of God, that can merge darkness into light and light into darkness, causing us from our own perspective, to abandon stupidity, embrace ideals, that is the true messianic redemption!
