All people need love and in essence what love means, is, the look a smiling toddler gives you – it is also why people like dogs more than cats – “I am happy to see you!” – the story is told about Rabbi Shneur Zalman the founder of Chabad mysticism who once was playing with his grandson, later to become the Tzemach Tzeddek – so he asked his grandson “where is Zaidy?” (grandpa) and so he pointed at his face, so he replied, that is Zaidy’s nose, so he pointed elsewhere, that is Zaidy’s eyes etc. suddenly the grandson got off his lap and went to the door and pretended to get caught in the door and he cried out – in alarm his grandfather rushed toward him and he triumphantly turned around and said “that is Zaidy!” – so to be a person, we need to feel like a person, which means, we need to feel loved; but the great irony is this – it is not really love we need to feel, rather to love! – for love is an emotion and it is the emotion of love that makes us feel good – the reason we need to be loved, is because love creates a reciprocal feeling, hence when I am loved, I love; as I love, I now feel this feeling – in other words (and much Kabbalah leads to this) I either can love which would mean in the context of items I share happily my food money home (as parents do for their children) or in fact barter, which is how strangers treat one another – when I get room service it is only because I paid for it – love cannot be bought, so we must understand, that the barter of goods in no way shape or form is love – it is simply exchange of desires or needs – but to feel like a human, to feel alive with joy, happiness and purpose, you must unconditionally love and as the Baal Shem Tov explains: to love, all you need to do is see what’s lovable in another!
