In other words the soul has two extremes
What happens if God forbid someone is in pain
The Alter Rebbe who describes the soul most and best in Tanya explains elsewhere that pleasure of course is what we desire, but the secondary (and often primary) desire (which is the corollary of attaining pleasure) is to not have pain!
