All human behavior must have a motive, we don’t go to the fridge to eat, unless we are hungry, or bored, or depressed, so any behavior, any action, must have a motive – generally (a big generally speaking) there are quite simply three possibilities: the first is desire for a experience which feels pleasurable; the second is fear, which is the converse of desire, for it is to not encounter an experience which is painful; but the unique gift we have, to rise above this selfish animalistic reactional perspective, and to overcome fear through faith that all God does is in our material or spiritual benefit and actively pursue goodness and kindness; now that’s the only real motive!
