Achieving Serenity

Most of us think – when I retire I’ll be happy
Do you know that the greatest predictor of death (in men) is retirement, with most men dying three years after retiring
The Rebbe famously said, the word retirement is not in my dictionary
Why
You see we are not animals, that can be happy just doing nothing
Retirement is not the biggest blessing but curse
I was the rabbi of a resort town – people work the whole year to take a holiday yet literally one week, truly in the most beautiful resort town in the world, they wanted to get back to the office for what makes (a man) happy is accomplishment.
If I offered you a lifetime of all the amenities in a resort town or a lifetime of hard work but afterwards your effort will have improved humanity there is no doubt the latter is more preferable than the former
However there is another problem to achieving serenity as Jung says that mans greatest problem is their torn obligations between family and work
So having conflicting accomplishments, both drawing you attention, causes conflict and conflict is the source of anxieties
Hence achieving serenity can only come through a singular goal that can act as a dual motivator for your varied responsibilities
This is the goal of fulfilling the will of G-d!
