What does it take to get us to act?

Today I realized something both sad and empowering!

I was reading a story about a young man, a holocaust survivor who dedicated his life to saving children who were in danger.

He and his wife would fly anywhere and do anything if there was a child in danger and he saved many refugees.

The question is why?

According to his Rabbi, this was because as a child of ten he had nebach been taken to the concentration camp, thus he knew what it was to suffer and not wanting any other to suffer as he had, he – which eventually cost him his life, as he was murdered in Iraq by Saddam Hussein – went beyond what any of us do to save children!

Why?

Because he understood the suffering!

In other words, many many people create organizations for cancer etc. etc. after they have suffered.

Do we really need to wait for God-forbid suffering, to act?
