The Baal Shem taught:
“Those who traverse the seas in ships, those who fulfill their soul mission working in the sea.”
This verse refers to three types of Jewish souls that enter into the world – the sea of confusion, darkness, meaninglessness, existential anxiety.
There are those souls fortunate to come into to a ship, a bastion of Judaism, so the world outside of them doesn’t seem as aimless, based on the light direction meaning, inside of them.
Then there are those who unfortunately – for the sake of becoming Baal Teshuvah, the highest level possible, as the Rebbe teaches; come into the sea of confusion, darkness, meaninglessness, existential anxiety; and then there are those souls who are specifically chosen by God to fulfill their soul-mission working in the sea.
